Students at the Government Autonomous Girls PG College of Excellence, Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, also known as Girls Degree College, Sagar, can anticipate some positive developments from the state Higher Education Department.

According to News18, female students will soon have the opportunity to pursue PhDs in all 15 subjects, as research centres for English and Geography only require formalities to be completed. With a PhD, students can advance to positions such as Assistant Professor, Professor, or Librarian in universities.

Currently, over 60 students at Government Girls PG College, Sagar, are pursuing PhDs in 13 different subjects. The establishment of research centres in Sagar means that students will no longer need to travel to Maharaja Chhatrasal Bundelkhand University. This change is significant as many female students abandon their studies midway through their MA programs due to the distance. With research centres in Sagar, students can continue their studies within the city.

Dr Rashmi Mathur, Head of the Geography Department, emphasised the importance of establishing research centres at the college. Currently, research centres in Geography and English are located at Chhatrasal University, requiring students to travel approximately 200 kilometres to Chhatarpur. Dr. Mathur noted that this distance contributes to the midterm dropout rate among female students. However, the establishment of research centres in Sagar will address this issue.

Recently, a research inspection team from Maharaja Chhatrasal Bundelkhand University Chhatarpur visited the English and Geography departments at Girls College. Dr Mathur mentioned that the team assured students that the research centre would soon be approved based on the facilities discovered during the inspection.

PhD courses are already underway in various areas at Girls Degree College, including Hindi, Commerce, Home Science, Physics, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Political Science, Psychology, History, Economics and Library Science. With the addition of English and Geography, female students will soon be eligible to pursue PhDs in all 15 subjects offered by the college.

Established by the Municipal Corporation of Sagar in 1964, the Government Autonomous Girls’ PG College of Excellence, Sagar, was renamed Girls Degree College, Sagar, the same year. In 1978, the Madhya Pradesh government took over and elevated it to the status of a government college.
