Concerns over Pakistan pushing infiltration through the Punjab route were further stoked by reports of seven suspicious men wearing civilian clothes with backpacks being spotted by a woman from Phangtoli village in Pathankot on Wednesday.

The woman told the police that the men emerged from the forest behind her house. One of them asked her for water in Punjabi. Afterwards, they went back towards the forest.

The woman said to them that there was no road on that side, but the men responded that they had some work in the forest.

An identification sketch has been released by Punjab police based on the descriptions provided by the woman.

Top intelligence sources told CNN-News18 that the incident was on expected lines and the matter was reported fast as the people in Punjab are cautious about terror incidents.

As already reported by CNN-News18, according to the sources, infiltration is happening through an active tunnel in the Samba sector.

There are around 20 to 25 terrorists in the Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban area who have come from Pakistan’s Punjab province, they said. There are reports that they have sneaked in through the Punjab sector also.

According to intelligence sources, this infiltration has happened in the last three months only.

Another set of infiltrations has happened in the Sunderbani and Uri sectors, they said.

Agencies are aware that after Kashmir being cordoned off, Jammu and now Punjab are being used by Pakistan for infiltration.

“It is much easier for these terrorists to enter from Punjab and later slip into the area of their choice or directions they have,” said an intelligence source. “Jammu and Punjab are vulnerable because these are peaceful areas for long with the civilian population and a huge number of Army establishments. Punjab police acted fast and we are hopeful of identifying the locations soon.”
