A woman recently took to the internet to share her challenging experience while working in Bengaluru. Using the handle @shaaninani on ‘X’, she recounted her time in the city, where she lived for about a year and a half after marrying into a Punjabi family, describing her experience as nothing short of awful.
She started by talking about how wearing a chooda (a set of traditional bridal bangles) for almost a month made it clear she was from North India. “What a harassment it was to commute in auto from flat to office and back. The audacity of local auto drivers to strike a conversation on why I was in Bangalore when I belonged to North, if I was learning Kannada, asking if I like anything apart from weather, asking for more money as I was newly married and pretending not to understand a word when I would talk in Hin/Eng,” she shared, calling her interactions with the locals “very bad.”

She also recounted calling BESCOM (Bangalore Electricity Supply Company) about a power cut: “The guy ended the call saying ‘No hindi, no English, only Kannada’. They only want to take care of problems of Kannada speakers.”
Her experience got even worse. “I was so engulfed by the negativity around me. TBH, I found the weather very depressing. It would rain all the time. We can’t go out. If we want to go out, we cant find cabs. If we find cab, then it will take hours to reach anywhere due to the traffic and water logging. I was stuck in my house.”
This led her to quit her job. “I feel such a drastic change of energy in me after coming to Gurgaon. I take long walks, I eat good food, I can travel wherever I want. No awkward conversations with auto drivers,” she concluded.
I was working in Bangalore for 1.5 years. Married in Punjab, I wore chooda for the entire 1 year as it is a part of my tradition. It was clearly evident I was from North India. What a harassment it was to commute in auto from flat to office and back. The audacity of local auto…

Her thread on ‘X’ quickly went viral, sparking public reactions. “Its an overhyped city with very arrogant people. I had seen many instances where autodrivers used to recklessly hit very expensive cars and if owners say something they used to take out knife and other weapons to attack,” one user commented. “This is the actual state of bangalore. This is what I exactly faced when I went there for 2 days. People expect you to learn Kannada even when you are visiting for 2 days,” said another.
