King’s Day or Koningsdag is a celebration held annually, on April 27, to celebrate King Willem-Alexander’s birthday. It is one of the biggest and most colourful festivities in the Netherlands, especially in Amsterdam. People dress in orange because the royal family bears the name ‘House of Orange’ (Huis van Oranje), and it is the national colour of the Netherlands. Formerly known as Queen’s Day, it was renamed after King Willem-Alexander’s ascension to the throne in 2013.
In a viral video, the recent Amsterdam’s King’s Day celebration saw a lively crowd grooving to Sapna Choudhary’s popular track Teri Aakhya Ka Yo Kajal. Locals and tourists, dressed mostly in orange attire, were seen dancing enthusiastically. The post has received over a lakh views, with the caption stating, “When Sapna Choudhary’s fever hit Amsterdam streets.”
The video not only highlighted the growing influence of Indian music on a global scale but also demonstrated the power of music to unite people from diverse backgrounds.
People immediately rushed to comment. A user wrote, “Amsterdam was once Part of Haryana.” Another commented, “Amster Nagar, Amsterabad,” while someone else called it “Amsterdham.”
“Orange colour represents India,” read another comment, while someone else wrote, “It’s kings day, we celebrate the king’s birthday by dressing orange partying and markets everywhere. The people were just being in a party mood, not really ‘India’ fans or something. Could have been turkish or any other ethnicity. Dutch people are humble and kind.”
Teri Aakhya Ka Yo Kajal is an energetic folk track by Haryanvi singer Sapna Choudhary. Released in 2017, the song is famous for its catchy beats but also its energetic dance moves. One of the major attractions of the song is its music video, which shows Sapna Choudhary showing off her signature dance moves.
