To mark World Chocolate Day celebrated on July 7, the European Space Agency (ESA) shared scenes from the International Space Station (ISS) where astronauts were seen enjoying chocolate treats. Mirroring celebrations on Earth, the astronauts engaged in activities such as making strawberry and chocolate crepes, savouring chocolate mousse, and even constructing a biscuit house. The unique microgravity environment showed chocolate crepes floating in the air.
The post also showed how astronauts sometimes get special shipments from their families that include canned goods and chocolates. ESA wrote in the caption, “As we celebrate World Chocolate Day on 7 July, let’s send a sweet shoutout to the astronauts savouring their favourite chocolate goodies while orbiting the Earth!” This post got over 26,000 likes in just one day.

Commenting on it, an Instagram user wrote, “I’m delighted. The last shot is just WoW. What a chocolate masterpiece. Congrats to the space baker(s)!! Happy choco day.” Another person observed, “Those chocolate goodies look yummy, enjoy!!!! God bless you, astronauts!!! Have a wonderful cosmic adventure!”
Someone else wrote, “I just realised how fun space is. You can build any structure that comes in your mind without the fear of collapsing due to lack of gravity.”
A curious Instagram user enquired, “Have you ever felt digestion problems in orbit? Sometimes I feel my stomach get weird even when I drink water while I stand on my feet. How do you eat something in low gravity? How does it feel?”
Many people also joked that the strawberry and chocolate crepe shown in the video looked like meat and tortillas. Making this point, an Instagram user wrote, “Why have they put undercooked livers on a tortilla along with Nutella.” Another person wondered, “Tortilla, chocolate with raw steak?”
As per NASA, daily astronauts eat freeze-dried and instant food. This includes items like granola bars and cookies, chicken consommé, macaroni and cheese, chicken and rice, scrambled eggs and cereals. For drinks, they get a selection of coffee, tea, apple cider, and juices. Astronauts get very little supply of fresh fruits and vegetables as fresh food needs to be consumed within a few days of getting to the ISS. They avoid eating bread because breadcrumbs often float in the air causing inconvenience and instead stick to falter breads like tortillas.
