The twelfth month of the year according to the Hindu calendar is Phalgun, typically corresponding with February or March in the Gregorian calendar. Phalgun signifies fun as it hosts the celebration of Holi. Bhilwara, known as the gateway to Mewar, boasts a rich culture and tradition. In this city, customs and traditions are passed down from generation to generation, with one such custom being the singing of Faag.

Every city and district of Rajasthan has its customs and traditions to celebrate the Phalgun month, with various events organised during this time. In Bhilwara, women go door-to-door singing Faag songs to mark the occasion. This tradition, especially prevalent in the Nath community, is preserved and handed down through generations.

In an interview with News18, Rupali Devi reminisced about how in the past, her family members would visit villages during the month of Phalgun to sing Faag songs and exchange greetings. These songs include Rajasthani folk songs and tunes from old movies, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of the Dafli.

A customary practice involves women taking a break from their daily chores to form groups and visit households singing these melodious songs, symbolising the celebration of the Phalgun month.

Rupali Devi emphasised that for women, their homes, fields and barns hold immense significance, as they are engaged in farming activities throughout the year. However, during the Phalgun month, women from the Nath community set aside their work to uphold the tradition of singing Faag songs. Like others, they believe that Phalgun is a month of happiness and singing these songs brings them immense joy. It’s the only time in the year when they can engage in this tradition wholeheartedly.

During the month of Phalgun, several festivals are celebrated, including the auspicious Vijaya Ekadashi and Maha Shivratri, along with Phulera Dooj, Holika Dahan and the vibrant festival of colours, Holi.
