Are you the one among 45% of adults who snore occasionally? If not, you must have been around someone who snores. Recently, it has been discovered by researchers that snoring is linked with heart-related problems. Sleep experts have warned that the habit of snoring is more than just anything and can lead to various health problems linked to the heart. They are warning that making loud noises at night is not normal. Notably, as we fall into a deep sleep, the muscles in the roof of our mouth, tongue, and throat relax; but if they relax too much, they can block the airway and vibrate, causing snoring. This is because of a harmful condition called sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea, further, is a disorder that may lead breathing to repeatedly stop throughout the night.
According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, interrupted sleep can cause chronic health issues like high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. It can be a sign of nasal issues like blockage or chronic congestion.
Recently, Dr Sina Joorabchi – an ear, nose, and throat surgeon in Florida – shared a few effective tips to stop snoring. She posted a video where she spoke about the ways to control snoring. The first tip he shared was to stop sleeping on your back.
In the video, he said, “The more you lie on your back, the more the tissues in the back of your throat can collapse, thereby putting you at risk for snoring.” He even recommended supporting yourself up at a 30-degree angle as it helps in opening up your airway.
Another tip that the doctor shared is taking a hot shower or bath close to bedtime as it reduces snoring.
A few other tips that one needs to follow include reducing alcohol intake as it causes muscles to collapse through the night which further amplifies snoring. Maintain your body weight to eliminate any symptoms of heart-linked disease.
Interestingly, a survey by Mute in the UK conducted with 2,000 people found 44 percent of people who snore or live with a person who snores are fed up with the noise. Such is the irritation that they would do anything to stop it.
