An anonymous Instagram user is organising a treasure hunt in Delhi by hiding crisp Rs 500 notes in nooks and corners of the national capital. The person shares a small clip on an Instagram account, simply named Treasure Hunt Delhi, which shows glimpses of the location where cash is hidden. The rules of the treasure hunt are simple: finders are keepers. The person who finds the money shares the photo or video to Treasure Hunt Delhi’s Instagram account as proof. He or she is announced as the winner and the contest for that spot ends. So far, the ‘Delhi Treasure Hunt’ has hidden money in 28 spots and gained over 15,000 followers since February 25.
The person who runs the account recently spoke to Money Control on the condition of anonymity. The person described his initiative as a “real-life competition that offers something of value in return.” The 25-year-old added that while he is happy to use his own money to organise such hunts, he hopes that in future he can get brand sponsorships to run the treasure hunt on a bigger scale. He said, “Right now since I am doing this on my own, I’ve started small with Rs 500, but as this page grows bigger, there will hopefully be brand promotions which will help me giveaway bigger prize pool.”
Treasure Hunt Delhi is not the only initiative that is hiding money across the city. Since February 9, another Instagram account named ‘Treasure Hunt Hyderabad’ has been spreading money around Hyderabad and urging fortune-seekers to claim it. The organisers of ‘Treasure Hunt Hyderabad’ keep the amount inside a white envelope that bears the name of their Instagram account. So far, their Instagram page has over 20,000 followers. The bio reads, “Join the excitement and stay tuned for exclusive cash hunts around Hyderabad –your go-to destination to try your luck.”
While speaking to Siasat.com, one of the organisers of Treasure Hunt Hyderabad explained the idea behind the treasure hunt and said, “The purpose of the treasure hunt is to move people from the digital realm to the real world, providing a platform for individuals to have fun, explore their city, and engage in a unique form of physical and mental activity.” The anonymous organiser added, “The joy and excitement shared by the community have become our greatest reward, motivating us to continue organizing unique and enjoyable events.”
