Finding a clean, unadulterated meal on Indian trains has become as challenging as securing a Tatkal ticket on the IRCTC app. Recently, a passenger shared a rather unfortunate experience of discovering a cockroach in their vegetable thali, ordered from IRCTC, which they promptly shared on the ‘Indian Railways’ subreddit.
In the video, the passenger excitedly opened their thali, expecting a simple yet satisfying meal of rice, dal, and two sabzis. To their dismay, they found a lively cockroach nestled on their gulab jamun, adding an unexpected twist to their dining experience.

The video quickly gained attention as Reddit users wasted no time in chiming in with their witty remarks. One user jokingly praised the “crunchy, protein-rich diet” while another sarcastically applauded the railway’s innovative approach to offering “expensive non-veg thali” complete with a live garnish. The banter continued with playful comments about the cockroach’s sudden “wildcard entry” into the dessert and its potential as an “impact player” in the culinary scene.

Sadly, this incident is not an isolated one. Another traveller aboard the Kashi Express recently shared a similarly disturbing experience. Parvez Hashmi took to social media to express his dismay after finding an insect in his meal. Sharing a troubling image of an unidentified object amidst the dal and sabzi, Hashmi raised concerns about the quality of food served on trains. Tagging Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hashmi provided detailed information about his journey aboard train number 15018, which operates between Gorakhpur and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus in Mumbai.
Truly, is it high time for authorities to address these issues and ensure that passengers can travel without having to worry about the safety and hygiene of their meals?
