While we are still trying to delve deeper into the mysteries of space and the cosmos in present times, the indigenous people of Spain, 3000 years ago, went ahead and crafted treasure from metals of extraterrestrial origin. Crafted from alien material, the Treasure of Villena is a bronze trove found in Spain more than 60 years ago. A story published earlier this month by Live Science stated that the treasure found in 1963 included 59 bottles, bowls and jewellery pieces exquisitely fashioned from gold, silver, amber and iron.

A few intriguing features regarding some of the iron pieces were spotted by the researchers who discovered the treasure. According to reports, the experts indicated the objects were made of ‘a dark leaden metal.’ The objects are primarily fractured and coated in an oxide that has a ferrous appearance in certain places.

According to a recent analysis, two of the artefacts’ iron came from a meteorite that struck Earth approximately a million years ago. Two of the iron pieces—a hollow spherical covered in a layer of gold and a bracelet in the shape of a C—were used in this investigation. These two objects were made somewhere between 1400 and 1200 B.C.

Scientists said that these meteorites also contain cobalt along with iron and nickel. The practice of making valuable things using fallen debris from space has been going on for thousands of years. The same was done with the tomb of Tutankhamun. Ignacio Montero Ruiz, one of the researchers, told Live Science that the Villena relics were most likely undiscovered gems that might have belonged to an entire community rather than just one individual or a royal family. According to Ruiz, both of these relics could have originated from the same meteorite because of how similar their compositions are. Who made the things and where they came from are unknown to the researchers. They are aware, nevertheless, that these are the Iberian Peninsula’s first and oldest meteoritic iron items.
