An employee of Tata Power has recently shed light on an alleged bizarre buyback policy for company laptops. The person dropped an anonymous post on Reddit, seeking legal advice regarding the matter. He claimed that the organisation was forcing him to buy the office laptop before leaving. According to the user, the company asked him to pay Rs. 65,000 for the device, which he used for company work. The person further revealed that he started working with Tata Power 1.2 years back but at the time of joining, he was not informed about such a scheme. The employee also mentioned that the terms and conditions of the laptop buyback policy was notified only five or six months ago.
“I need your suggestions as to what legal recourse I should take. They never mentioned anything as such when I joined this organisation 1.2 years back. They issued a circular 5-6 months back stating the terms and conditions of the buyback,” the user wrote.
He alleged that Tata Power is refusing to give experience certificates to those employees, who are not buying the company laptops. The Reddit user urged the online community to help him find a solution as soon as he left the company in the coming few months.
“They are forcing employees left right and centre to buy the laptop they gave us to do company work, and if you deny, they refrain from giving one his experience certificate too. Need help as to what actions can I take to overcome this situation, I am planning to leave the organisation in a few months,” the user added.
The post has caught the attention of many, who shared their thoughts in the comments section. One of them recognised himself as an advocate and suggested that the employee should “send a strongly worded email to HR.” “A company cannot force you to purchase the official laptop. This sounds outlandish and unbelievable for a company like TATA,” noted the person.
Another user feels that the employee should contact his former colleagues, who have already left the company, and ask them to share a LinkedIn post, highlighting the topic. According to him, “These things work well on LinkedIn.”
An ex-employee of the organisation also commented on the situation confirming the alleged laptop buyback policy, “I was also an employee of Tata Power and I left the company 3 months back although I had my laptop for more than 4 years so after Buyback I got it at around 5k but my two more colleagues who left the organisation after 1 year of getting laptop they had to pay Rs 64,000 and one more colleague had to pay Rs 56,000. And the main thing is the Laptop isn’t worth this much price.”
