Women Safety: This Android App Will Alert Friends With Voice Recording And Photos When You Scream
The app is able to recognise a high-pitched scream even if the phone is kept inside a bag. Also, the app can be triggered by pressing the power button 5 times.

Smartphones are now being used as the latest tool to promote women safety under crime prone situations. Dozens of apps have been developed which allow users to automatically send SOS alerts to their emergency contacts at the click of a button.

However, in the time of crisis, it might not always be possible for someone to take out their phone and access these features quite easily. One assured thing at times when the safety of a person is compromised is a high pitched ‘Scream’.

Keeping this in mind, Kishlay Raj, an engineering student from Kolkata has developed an app by the name of ‘Chilla’.

This app makes sure your personal security is not at stake even if you can’t access your phone. The app is able to recognise a high-pitched scream even if the phone is kept inside a bag. Also, the app can be triggered by pressing the power button 5 times.

As soon as the app is triggered by any means, it sends SMS to three pre-set emergency contacts, initiates audio recording on the phone and sends across the recording as a mail to these contacts, along with a photo captured by the front camera of the phone.

It also places an emergency call to one emergency contact set by the user.

In order to differentiate between a scream and everyday noises around a user, the app focusses on the frequency of the scream as opposed to its volume. The app has gained amazing reviews since its launch with a current rating of 4.8 stars based on 186 total reviews.

The app settings let you toggle between Scream modes ranging from ‘Very sensitive’ to ‘moderate’ and ‘most accurate’. Users can switch on the safety mode as per their requirement, providing them with 30 mins of protection every time the app is toggled ‘ON’.

“We have not encountered any complaints from the users as of now. The app works equally well with phones of any range” said Kishlay Raj, Developer of the app, in a telephonic interview with Sarthak Dogra of News18.

Raj is now in talks with a Women Safety Organisation for his next project. On asking whether an iOS version of the app will soon be available, he said, “There are no plans as such.”
