There’s a new hoax message spreading in town on WhatsApp and you should beware of it. The message is related to “WhatsApp Gold”. Some users have recently received a message that states: “Today the radio was talking about Whatsapp Gold and it’s true. There is a video that will be launched tomorrow in Whatsapp and is called Martinelli, do not open it. Goes into your phone and nothing you do will fix it. Spread the word if you know someone. If you receive a message to update Whatsapp Gold, do not open it! They just announced that the virus is serious. Send it to everyone.”

A message about something called the 'Martinelli video' started being sent to WhatsApp users, warning them that if they opened the video, their phones would get infected by an indelible virus. The scam encourages users to click on a dangerous link via the app to “update” to the alleged premium service. Once they’ve clicked the link, they are then taken to a website riddled with malware, which can break into your phone, and steal your messages and other private data.

If you have been using WhatsApp for years now, you’ll probably remember that back in 2016 a hoax message was spread with the same “Martinelli” word on it.
