Pebble announces hardware accessory platform to let sensor manufacturers build 'smart straps'
The initiative lets smartwatch accessory makers to built watch straps containing sensors that can transfer data to apps running on its devices.

New Delhi: In a week's time Pebble Technology has unveiled two new products-its latest Pebble Time smartwatch with better battery support, and a'smart strap' building platform which is touted as the industry vertical's first 'hardware accesory port' initiative.

Announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the initiative lets smartwatch accessory makers to built watch straps containing sensors that can transfer data to apps running on its devices.

Pebble CEO Eric Migicovsky said that the Pebble smartwatch is no longer just an accessory to the phone but is its own unique computing device.

As the new hardware platform is open, all developers, or hackers, will be able to build on top of it, and then make device accessories equipped with functions such as GPS tracking that can be attached directly to a Pebble device.

The updated Pebble Time smartwatch is available on crowdfunding site- Kickstarter and its features include up to 10 days of battery life, a stainless steel body, and optional leather or steel straps. The device will start shipping in July.
