Is Google Still Working on AR-Based HoloLens Competitor?
Google is working on a standalone headset that would not require it to be synced with a mobile phone or a computer to carry out tasks. This headset would have a screen but also bring in elements of augmented reality.

New Delhi: After a lukewarm response to the Glass, Google is reportedly planning to build a new type of headset that would have the best of augmented reality and virtual reality.

Despite Google having earlier announced scrapping its plans for such a device, a report on Engadget says that the company is still going ahead with it.

The standalone headset would not require it to be synced with a mobile phone or a computer to carry out tasks. This headset would have a screen but also bring in elements of augmented reality.

The purported device is likely to be closer to Microsoft's HoloLens in terms of appearance rather than Facebook's Oculus Rift.

The search giant also has other projects underway which are based on virtual reality, including Project Daydream - an Android-powered VR platform that has been built on the successes of Google Cardboard.
