Vijay Sethupathi had expressed his disinterest in playing a villain, some time back at IFFI, Goa.

Vijay Sethupathi is one of the iconic actors in Indian cinema with many hits to his credit like Jawan and 96. In an illustrious career of more than a decade, Vijay Sethupathi has nailed all the roles, whether that of the protagonist or the antagonist. Now, there are reports that he might again essay the role of a villain in the film Thalaivar 171, starring Rajinikanth. Lokesh Kanagaraj will write and direct this movie. Vijay Sethupathi and Lokesh’s collaboration has worked brilliantly in films like Master and Vikram. If the reports of Vijay Sethupathi’s inclusion in Thalaivar 171 are true, it will be their third film together.

Vijay Sethupathi had expressed his disinterest in playing a villain, some time back at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. He admitted that he agreed to play the antagonist numerous times, as the protagonist (of the film) would call him up to take up the role. Vijay Sethupathi said that he feels that makers also put a lot of emotional pressure on him to play negative roles. He also said that playing the role of an antagonist requires quite several restrictions. Vijay Sethupathi explained it further. He revealed that a villain is required to underplay the character, so that the protagonist is not overshadowed. He also said that most of the time, his parts as a villain are cut at the editing table.

Vijay has given some of the most remarkable performances in his career as a villain in many films. In 2012, he was presented the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for the Best Villain he played in Sundarapandian. S Prabhakaran directed this film. Moving forward to 2017, he also left everyone stunned with his performance as a villain in the crime thriller film Vikram Vedha. In 2018, he again appeared in the film Petta, directed by Karthik Subbaraj. Rajinikanth played the lead role in this film. Sethupathi has also played a negative role in the Telugu film Uppena, directed by Buchi Babu Sana. Vijay Sethupathi left an indelible mark on the audience’s hearts with his portrayal of a villain in the Tamil film Vikram.
