New Delhi: After Arunachal Pradesh, the Congress is staring at another political crisis in Uttarakhand. Twenty-eight BJP MLAs and 10 rebel Congress legislators arrived in Delhi on Friday night in their bid to topple the government of Chief Minister Harish Rawat. Sources said they are likely to meet the top brass of the BJP on Saturday.
The 10 Congress rebels include former chief minister Vijay Bahuguna, Harak Singh Rawat, Pradeep Batra, Shailendra Singhal, Umesh Chandra Kau, Subodh Uniyal, Shaila Rani Rawat, Amrita Rawat and Kunwar Pranav.
A three-member BJP delegation comprising former chief minister and MP Bhagat Singh Koshiyari, BJP in-charge of Uttarakhand Shyam Jaju and general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya met Governor KK Paul on Friday and said the Harish Rawat government was in a minority and sought its dismissal.
BJP MLA Ajay Bhatt, the Leader of Opposition in the Uttarakhand Assembly, was also a part of the delegation. The Governor told them that action would be taken after gathering sufficient details.
According to the sources, the BJP staked claim to form the government with the support of the rebel Congress MLAs.
Meanwhile, the beleaguered Uttarakhand Chief Minister claimed he had "full majority" and warned of disciplinary action against the rebels. "We have full majority. All our members are intact. The figures being touted (about our government's strength being reduced) are totally wrong," he said.
He added that if some Congress MLAs, "being lured" by BJP, are today making any claim, the party would take cognizance of it and "whatever action is taken within the party in such cases will be taken."
Rawat said the party will find out who the rebel Congress MLAs are and "so far, only one face has come to the fore."
