Lucknow: As the race to Lucknow heats up with the trends showing the Samajwadi Party as the single largest party, Congress leader P L Punia has suggested that the party may extend support to the former if needed.
Though Punia said that a decision in this regard would be taken by party president Sonia Gandhi, he said that the party must be flexible.
"This is not a decision that I can take. Sonia Gandhi will decide that. We should be flexible," said the Congress MP on extending support to the SP.
Referring to the issues taken up by the Congress during the campaign in Uttar Pradesh, the leader said that the Muslim quota issue was taken too late.
"Quota for Muslims was not a wrong decision. It was a good decision but taken too late," he said, conceding, "People's mandate is in favour of the Samajwadi Party."
Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party maintained that it would not need any support to form the government in Uttar Pradesh.
Senior leader Shivpal Yadav said, "SP will form government in UP with clear majority. I don't think we will need any support."
He further said that Mulayam Singh Yadav would be the Chief Minister of the state.
However, another SP leader, Shahid Siddiqui, said that the party would see how many seats were required for it to form the government.
"We will see how many we require if we do require. We will cross 200. If we are short, it will only be 5-10 seats," he said.
