New Delhi: In a major setback for YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Supreme Court on Friday refused to say an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into his assets. The two-judge bench of justices Dalveer Bhandari and Deepak Verma dismissed the Andhra MP's plea against the High Court's order.
The Andhra Pradesh High Court has directed the CBI to conduct a preliminary inquiry into allegations against Reddy's wealth and submit a report to it.
Jagan, son of late chief minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy, had approached the apex court challenging Andhra Pradesh High Court. The petition has challenged the July 12 High Court order arguing it was "illegal" "erroneous" and "unsustainable" and deserves to be quashed.
Jagan contended the High Court did not have the jurisdiction to order a preliminary CBI probe on a "politically motivated" petition.
He has sought quashing of the High Court order which directed CBI to submit its report in two weeks.
The High Court had passed the order on the petition filed by Andhra Pradesh textiles minister P Shankar Rao accusing Jagan of amassing huge wealth using his late father's position as the chief minister.
The High Court had said it will decide on the issue of a full-fledged inquiry based after the preliminary report from CBI.
Jagan, after being denied the chief minister's post following his father's death in a helicopter crash, has floated YSR Congress Party on whose symbol he and his mother won Kadapa Lok Sabha and Pulivendla Assembly seats in recent by-polls.
