Uncertainty prevails in Jammu and Kashmir with no decision yet over government formation in the state. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) headed by party chief Mehbooba Mufti will be holding a meeting on Monday morning to strategise its move.
Mehbooba Mufti has called the alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) a courageous decision but added that the party will have to reassess if the alliance is effectively working to forge a reconciliation between the regions of Jammu and Kashmir. She said the party cannot form a government just for the sake of power.
Mehbooba also said she will take a call after "reassessing" whether ally BJP's government at the Centre would take substantive steps in a "set time-frame" to address the "core" political and economic issues of the state.
Political observers though are just looking at it as Mehbooba's bargaining tactic. The PDP also met on Sunday for a high-level meeting in Srinagar, but no announcement was made thereafter.
Meanwhile, National Conference patron Farooq Abdullah on Sunday said the BJP and PDP could go ahead with formation of government in Jammu and Kashmir as they have requisite numbers as well as a "common programme".
"I don't know if they (BJP and PDP) will form government or not. But, our party has been telling them to form government as they have numbers. A state must have a government," Abdullah said.
He said it was necessary to take forward the common minimum programme the BJP and PDP had agreed to for forming their coalition government.
"BJP joined hands with PDP and formed the government earlier. They are having a common programme. Now, to take ahead this programme, it is necessary that a government is formed in Jammu and Kashmir," said Abdullah.
