PDP claims Mehbooba Mufti to be next J&K CM, BJP keeps cards close to its chest
The PDP and BJP joined hands to form the government in the state after the 2014 Assembly elections result gave a hung verdict.

New Delhi: With the demise of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on Thursday, his daughter Mehbooba Mufti is likely to take over the reins.

As Sayeed's health deteoriated there were murmurs of a possible change of guard. Sayeed had himself hinted during a press conference in Jammu in November 2015 that he would like to hand over the reins to his daughter Mehbooba Mufti.

While Peoples Democratic Party leader Rafi Ahmad Mir claimed Mehbooba Mufti will be the next Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, the Bharatiya Janata Party is keeping cards closed to its chest.

Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, "This is not the right time to discuss the matter of who the successor will be."

Mehboobs Mufti's name was doing the rounds as much of the credit to Sayeed's electoral success is given to her, who has mobilised and organised cadre for the party and is known as a hard bargainer. Her bargaining prowess came to the fore after the Assembly elections in 2015 threw up a hung verdict.

Mehbooba is believed to have worked hard behind the scenes in ensuring that her father is agreed upon by the BJP as Chief Minister for a complete six-year term and that the post is not on a rotational basis.
