Non filing of IT returns: Jayalalithaa, aide skip court appearance
Jayalalithaa has moved the Supreme Court to extend trial by another four months.

Chennai: AIADMK supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and her aide Sasikala Natarajan failed to appear before and economic offence court in Chennai on Thursday. Jayalalithaa has moved the Supreme Court to extend trial by another four months.

After the duo failed to appear, the court adjourned the case to April 28. The court had directed them to appear on Thursday for questioning and framing of charges for not filing Income Tax returns between 1991-93.

Rejecting her plea for exemption from personal appearance citing hectic electioneering work as not maintainable, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) in Chennai R Dakshinamurthy had warned that if Jayalalithaa failed to appear before him on April 10, "appropriate orders" would be passed.

"No more petitions for condoning her absence and for adjourning the case will be entertained. Otherwise suitable orders will be passed in accordance with law," the ACMM said.

Jayalalithaa has escaped a similar fate in her assets case in Bangalore after a special court revised its directive and exempted her presence on security grounds.
