Mumbai: The Congress workers will stage a "rail roko" in Mumbai on Wednesday to protest the recent hike in railway passenger fares and freight rates announced by the Centre.
Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Manikrao Thakare on Tuesday instructed party workers to hold the 'rail roko' demonstrations at Mumbai from 11 am to 12 noon. At other places, the protests would be held from 10 am and 11 am.
"Commuters will not be affected by the demonstrations as they will not last for more than an hour," Thakare said.
Thakare said that the party has also decided to stage sit-ins outside residences of the Sena-BJP MPs in the state.
"A signature campaign will be also be taken out during the protests," he said, adding that the agitations would be intensified if the demand of rollback in the fare is not met.
Responding to a query on BJP's meeting with railway authorities, Thakare said the Congress was not concerned with the BJP delegation meeting the railway minister.
"Our criticism that the Modi government is only for rich and elite, has proved true," he said, adding that the new government has disappointed the common man.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Congress activists on Tuesday held demonstrations in various parts of the city protesting against the fare hike and demanded an immediate rollback in the fares.
