Newly-appointed WB Finance Minister Amit Mitra said that the WB economy was in a moribund state.

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday allocated the key Finance portfolio to former FICCI secretary-general Amit Mitra and Commerce, Industries and Parliamentary Affairs department to her close aide Partha Chatteerjee.

Portfolios of other cabinet ministers and ministers of state would be announced soon, the chief minister told her maiden press conference after holding the first cabinet meeting at the Writers' Buildings.

"I will keep some departments with me," Mamata said without disclosing the ones she would keep.

A few days ago, Mamata had said that she would like to hold the Home, Health and Education departments.

She said that beside herself, 35 ministers took oath.

"Congress (Trinamool Congress ally) will communicate the names of five ministers of state," Mamata added.

West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra on Friday said the financial position of the state was "not at all good" and it would take some time for him to gauge the exact status.

"What I gathered is that the financial condition is not at all good and it will take some time to gauge the exact status after going through the detailed data," Mitra told PTI after his discussions with the senior officials.

The former Ficci secretary-general said he has discussed the financial condition with finance secretary C M Bachawat.

"I must give credit to the bureaucrats for giving me a true financial picture of the state," he added.

Earlier after wining from the Khardah constituency, Mitra had said that the West Bengal economy was in a moribund state and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banjerjee had to breathe new life into the economy.
