Latehar killings: Communal hatred being brewed for electoral politics, says Congress
Congress MP Ghulam Nabi Azad said that there are growing concerns across the nation on communal hatred and vote bank politics.

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Sunday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the killing of two Muslim cattle traders in Jharkhand, suggesting such incidents gave the spectacle that democracy does not exist in the country.

"With great dismay, I am impelled to observe that such episodes of brutality and mob violence seem to give a spectacle of some parts of the world where democracy does not exist, not of India – which is widely respected as a vibrant and secular democracy, governed by rule of law," his letter reads.

He said the entire nation was worried about the unchecked growth of communal hatred and mistrust being brewed for the sake of electoral politics.

"You may recall that in recent past excuses were made to target the minority community in the name of one pretext or the other; such as Dadri in Muzaffarnagar, raiding the Kerala House kitchen in Delhi, mess of Aligarh Muslim University, search the rooms, beating and handing over to police of Kashmiri students in Mewar University at Chittorgarh in Rajasthan and in this long list of hate campaign yesterday's incident in Jharkhand is the recent one," it reads.

"It is unfortunate that our country has seen sharp spurt in incidents of threats, intimidation, mob violence and vigilantism after the takeover of BJP government in Centre," it says.

Azad, however, emphasized that the concerns do not mean that the Congress party is against anti-cow slaughter laws in multiple states. He stressed for a communal harmony in the country. "Entire nation worried about unchecked growth of communal hatred and mistrust being brewed for the sake of electoral politics," he said.

Azad asked why Sangh Parivar affiliates continued to make provocative statements despite Modi' messages on peace at the recent World Culture Festival and World Sufi Forum.

"Why your message has failed to reach such elements within our country? The only reason I understand is that the Government has failed to take stringent action against such elements who, as a consequence, feel emboldened and encouraged," he said.

On Friday morning two Muslim cattle traders, one a minor, were found hanging from a tree in Jhabar village under Balumath police station area of Latehar district in Jharkhand.

The local police arrested five men including one with link to an outfit for protection of cows. Those who were killed identified as Mohammad Majloom (35) and Inayatullah Khan (12)

Meanwhile, Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das on Sunday said he has instructed the administration to ensure that no such incident takes place in future.
