New Delhi: Law Minister Salman Khurshid on Tuesday defended Home Minister P Chidambaram on the 2G spectrum allocation issue, saying he is an "extremely upright" and well-informed lawyer" and did things specifically as the law permitted.
His comments came on a day CBI was directed by a Delhi court to provide a certified copy of a file relating to 2G issue to Janta Party president Subramanian Swamy who alleged the document would prove the "complicity" of the then Finance Minister P Chidambaram in the scam.
Khurshid said Chidambaram is an "extremely upright" and "well-informed" lawyer and that he would absolutely go by what the book says.
"I am not sure that there was anything that required Chidambaram to bypass it. Whatever Chidambaram has done, very specifically, was done under the law as is permitted. All Chidambaram may have done is to explain what was happening. That's all. He is a lawyer so he understands," he said.
Swamy, in an application filed before the court, said the file, relating to the Unified Access Services Licences (UASL) policy regarding sale of equity (lock-in period), was seized by the CBI on October 22, 2009, during the investigation.
"There is nothing, whatsoever and I know that, Chidambaram could have done, did do or Chidambaram would have wanted to do. Chidambaram is extremely upright and well-informed lawyer," Khurshid said.
Asked whether the Goverment endorses Chidambaram's stand that decision on dilution was above board, Khurshid said, "Chidambaram is a senior member of this government and it is obviously what the government would support and endorse."
