New Delhi: After days of campaigning and a record voter turn-out in the Delhi University Students Unions (DUSU) elections this year, the results are finally out. The newly elected President Arun Hooda and Vice President Varun Khari both are from the National Students' Union Of India (NSUI).
Hooda beat ABVP's Ankit Dhananjay Chaudhary and Khari beat Gaurav Chaudhary to grab the posts. While Varun Choudhry won the post of secretary by defeating ABVP's Ritu Rana.
Since there was a tie between NSUI's Raveena Chaudhary and ABVP's Vishu Basoya for the post of joint secretary, the result would now be decided by a lottery.
Congress' student wing NSUI has raised topical issues like that of Unmukt Chand's attendance and providing better facilities to and different rules for students who are bringing glory to the country by participating in high levels of competition. Along with the students who take part in other co-curricular activities and NCC.
Among the major issues that NSUI raised in this year's election is the demand to introduce evening classes in all Delhi University colleges and faculties so that more number of students can be absorbed for a wider scope. Currently only the Law faculty and a few colleges in the South campus have this provision.
Hostels for students across the city is also high on the NSUI agenda. They had found out (by Right to Information Act) that there are almost 95 acres of land that is under Delhi University in areas away from the main campus - in Dwarka, Narela, Preet Vihar and other areas.
This time around the DUSU polls were not so much of a lavish affair as we have seen in past years. Students had campaigned and done their share of running around for spreading the good word for their parties. But the scenes in the campus on the voting day were much mellowed and well in control.
A pool of security personnel and party volunteers were present all over the campus, the election went on smoothly, setting a good example to the students.
DUSU is the representative body of the students from most colleges and faculties of Delhi University.
