Amid the ‘horse-trading’ accusations ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections in Karnataka, the state unit of Congress filed a police complaint against BJP-JD(S) for allegedly trying to lure and threaten certain MLAs to vote for their candidate in the upcoming polls.
The new development comes a day after Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar claimed he had information that JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy made offers to Congress MLAs to buy their votes for the February 27 Rajya Sabha elections in the state.
Karnataka Congress filed a complaint with Bengaluru City police commissioner against BJP and JDS accusing them of allegedly trying to threaten and lure few MLAs to vote for NDA Rajya Sabha candidate Kupendra Reddy.
“They are trying to lure certain MLAs with crores of rupees and have threatened of consequences if they do not vote for Kuppendra reddy,” AS Ponanna, CM legal advisor said.
The Congress has alleged that BJP and JDS have offered crores of rupees to the Independent MLAs and have threatened them of consequences if they do not vote for NDA Rajyasabha candidate Kupendra Reddy.
According to an NDTV report, Congress accused BJP of offering several crore rupees to two independent MLAs and two others from local parties. The ruling party further claimed the two independents, and at least one of the other two, were ready to back its candidates.
With the Rajya Sabha elections set to be decided by MLA votes, getting a minimum of 45 votes is essential for victory. The Congress holds a considerable advantage with 135 MLAs, potentially securing three out of the four seats if no cross-voting occurs.
To secure victory the NDA needs support from Darshan Puttannaiah of Sarvodaya Karnataka Paksha and independent MLAs Latha Mallikarjun and KH Puttaswamy Gowda.
