Hyderabad: As citizens voice is growing on social media demanding reduction of Hyderabad Metro fare, the main opposition party, Telangana Congress has threatened to launch mass agitation, if the high Metro fare prices are not rolled back.
The minimum fare, for the initial 30 km stretch, has been kept at Rs 10, for up to 2 kms, and maximum at Rs 60, for more than 26 kms.
The Congress has condemned the State Government for changing the slabs from six to 10 in violation of Tariff Agreements, making the prices unaffordable for poor and middle class people.
Speaking to CNN News18, TPCC chief Uttam Kumar Reddy said, "The Hyderabad metro was conceived, designed, sanctioned and even major portion of work was completed by then Congress government. It is because of the present Chief Minister KCR that he first wanted to change the alignment and then he did not change it, which resulted in cost escalation by Rs 4000 crore and 3.5 years delay. That cost burden is now being put on the citizens."
There are also people who are taking to social media to demand reduction in Hyderabad metro rail.
Kishore, a citizen of Hyderabad said, "I travel from Uppal to Begumpet for work. Travelling in Metro is costing me at least Rs 100, up and down. Same if I travel on my bike it costs me Rs 70. I want to use Metro, but its not financially suiting me. If fares are revised, I can use the Metro".
Interestingly, Hyderabad Metro Rail received overwhelming response on first day. Since morning, long queues were seen outside stations and over 2 lakh passengers travelled, which was a record by any city after inauguration.
