New Delhi: At a time when the BSP is attempting to replicate its social engineering elsewhere, the Congress on Monday admitted two Brahmin leaders of the Mayawati-led party in the key state of Uttar Pradesh into its fold.
Sitting BSP MP from Mirzapur Ramesh Dubey joined the party along with Suryamani Tiwari, who was until recently the BSP candidate from Bhadohi, before being replaced by another candidate.
"Important leaders are joining the Congress due to its policies and programmes. Both these leaders are important," state Congress President Rita Bahuguna Joshi told reporters.
Joshi said that Dubey spent 30 years in the Congress before moving to the BSP while Tiwari went to the BSP two years ago.
Asked whether the Congress will manage to emerge stronger with the induction of leaders from other parties, Joshi said they were with the Congress earlier and it was only a "home coming".
Both Dubey and Tiwari are likely to be fielded from UP in the Lok Sabha elections.
