Delhi Police commissioner BS Bassi on Tuesday seemed to defend Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA OP Sharma, who was seen on camera assaulting an unidentified person outside Patiala House Court.
Bassi claimed that Sharma himself was injured and that the environment at court was highly volatile.
The Delhi Police chief said, "If you have seen the clippings, then OP Sharma was also hurt in the scuffle. The atmosphere was surcharged, there were allegations from both ends so we have lodged FIRs in both cases."
OP Sharma himself continued to be unrepentant over the matter.
He said, "When I was leaving the court there was a person who was shouting anti-national slogans. When I asked him to stop and not make such comments, a scuffle took place, I also received injuries...action should be taken against the people giving anti-national statements."
The issue also sparked a political row, with Left leader Sitaram Yechury accusing the Delhi Police chief of "acting like a representative of the government rather than doing his duty".
He said, "Commissioner is working as the voice of the government, will question his role in Parliament. We will ask the President on what his government is doing and how it is promoting fear in the country."
