Dismissing rumours of Amit Shah replacing Anandiben Patel as the next Chief Minister of Gujarat, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday categorically stated that the party president is not in the race for the CM post.
"BJP chief Amit Shah not being considered for CM's post. The party needs him at the national level," Venkaiah Naidu said after the BJP Parliamentary Board meeting.
In the BJP meeting held on Wednesday to deliberate on the future course of action in Gujarat, the party authorised Amit Shah to pick the CM nominee for the state. Senior party leaders Nitin Gadkari and Saroj Pandey will be the central observers at Gujarat BJP legislature party meet to decide next CM.
The legislature party meeting is likely to be held on Friday after Shah reaches Ahmedabad on Thursday.
Anandiben will tender her resignation to the Governor on Wednesday after the BJP Parliamentary Board gave its go ahead to the incumbent to resign.
"The Parliamentary Board gave its approval to Anandiben Patel's wish to quit. She had wished to be relieved of her responsibility as she would turn 75 soon. She has set up a great precedent for lakhs of party workers. It put on record her very good work as the chief minister and as a minister earlier," Naidu said.
