India is all set to host the world’s most popular two-wheeled motor sporting race, MotoGP, for the first time in history. The racing event, officially named MotoGP Bharat is slated to take place at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The three-day event will kick off on September 22, while the final race is scheduled to be flagged off on September 24, Sunday. The qualifying and the sprint races will be held on Saturday, September 23. The MotoGP Bharat will feature a number of big names from the sports including the likes of Aleix Espargaro and Fabio Quartararo.
MotoGP Bharat marks the 13th leg of the 2023 FIM MotoGP World Championship. The first leg of the 20-round season was held in Portugal earlier in March, while the final round will take place in Spain in November.
This is the first time a two-wheeled motor sporting competition is being held at the Buddh International Circuit. The venue previously hosted three premier Formula 1 races as part of the Indian Grand Prix from 2011 to 2013. However, the Indian Grand Prix was dropped from the Formula 1 calendar after 2013 owing to financial and bureaucratic issues. The Buddh International Circuit covers a total distance of 5.15 kilometres. The racing venue was first opened in 2010.
