In the realm of the education sector in India, the year 2023 unfolded significant developments including establishing CBSE’s new office in the UAE, and a home-based education system, among others. From the Ministry of Education’s new curriculum framework to the 23 Sainik schools set up, let’s have a look at some top developments that took place in the education sector during this year:
OVER 8 LAKH TEACHING VACANCIES IN GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS
The Education Ministry of India shared that there are over 8.4 lakh teaching vacancies at the elementary and secondary levels in government schools across India. As per the ministry, there are 7.2 lakh teaching positions available at the primary level and 1.2 lakh vacancies at the secondary level.
CBSE TO SET UP OFFICE IN UAE
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced that the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will soon establish an office in the UAE in the near future. During his three-day visit to Abu Dhabi, the education minister stated that the UAE and India have strong ties in the strategic partnership, particularly in education and skills. More than 100 CBSE schools operate in the UAE, and India is further looking to open a CBSE office there soon.
TWO BOARD EXAMS
In order to make the board exams easier and provide the students with the option to retain the best score, the Ministry of Education’s new curriculum framework recommended that the board examinations will be conducted twice a year. While students in classes 11 and 12 will have to study two languages instead of one, including a native Indian language.
OVER 70,000 STUDENTS RECEIVE HOME-BASED EDUCATION
The Union Education Ministry revealed that there are 72,186 students whose education is based at home instead of any school in the country for the years 2023–24. Out of which, Tamil Nadu leads the list with 11,400 students, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 10,935 students who don’t go to school. The home-based education included children with multiple or severe disabilities who are unable to attend school, as well as children whose parents refused to send them to school.
RAJNATH SINGH APPROVES 23 NEW SAINIK SCHOOLS
To provide quality education to the students and give them better career opportunities, including joining the Armed Forces, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the setting up of 23 new Sainik schools in partnership mode. This initiative has started in a categorized manner, starting from Class 6 onwards, in partnership with NGOs, private schools, and state governments. Under this initiative, the Sainik Schools Society has also signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with 19 new Sainik schools located all over the country.
CBSE ALLOWS STUDENTS TO LEARN IN 22 REGIONAL LANGUAGES
The Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, informed that the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools have decided to keep 22 regional languages as a medium of instruction in their schools. Till now, the mediums of instruction were English and Hindi in CBSE schools across the country. The education minister issued a circular and stated that a student who reads in his or her mother tongue understands the subject better than in Hindi or English. Hence, from classes 1 to 12, the new mediums of instruction were added under the National Education Policy (NEP) provisions.
