Odisha Education Department Releases Degree College Holiday List For 2024
A list of holidays for degree colleges in 2024 has been released by the Odisha department of higher education. According to the holiday schedule, summer vacation will begin on May 4

The Higher Education Department, Odisha recently published the holiday list for degree colleges in the state for the year 2024. The state has over 1,000 degree-granting institutions, including government and aided colleges. There are also teacher education institutions (TEIs) in the state. In these colleges, approximately two lakh students are currently pursuing their education. According to the holiday schedule, summer vacation will begin on May 4, 2024, and will last until June 17, 2024.

The calendar encompasses regional celebrations like Durga Puja and Raja Sankranti along with all the major national holidays like Republic Day and Independence Day. Furthermore, all of the significant Odisha festivals, including the Rath Yatra and Konark Dance Festival, are also listed on the calendar.

In 2024, there will be a total of 72 days holiday for these degree-granting institutions. Beginning on New Year’s Day, the holidays will last until December 25, when the Christmas holiday falls. For students and college staff, the list consists of eight Mondays and two Saturdays that provide them with consecutive holidays and weekends.

In the upcoming year, the education department will offer 38 days off for summer vacations. Additionally, a six-day Durga Puja holiday will be offered from October 10, 2024 to October 16, 2024. There are 26 other one-day holidays, such as Republic Day and Independence Day, in addition to these.

The government has also listed two local holidays in 2024, out of the total of 72 holidays. Taking into account local needs, the respective college principals will announce the two local holidays, if needed. “Local holidays declared by the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC) are not applicable to the colleges. However, the principals may choose any two of the local holidays declared by RDCs,” Rajata Kumar Mansingh, Deputy Director of the Higher Education Department said, as quoted by Times of India (TOI).

The higher education department stated in a letter to the principals of the degree colleges and TEIs that in order to promote uniformity in holiday observance, all of these colleges operating under the department must closely adhere to a common holiday list. The department stated that the government may make last-minute changes to this list, which is only provisional, reports add.

Earlier in November, the Odisha government released the lists of holidays as well as optional holidays for its government employees in the 2024 calendar year.
