The ODI World Cup ended a few days back and the focus is now swiftly shifting towards the next year’s T20 World Cup.
The Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, had a memorable run to the title clash in the ODI showpiece where they were bested by Australia in the final last Sunday.
Rohit was in stunning form with the bat and his ultra-aggressive approach with the bat was responsible for the Indian team getting off to flying starts providing the cushion to the middle order to bat deep into the innings.
Rohit finished the tournament with 597 runs – the second-most after his India teammate Virat Kohli who accumulated a record 765 runs.
Considering their phenomenal show in the competition, India legend Gautam Gambhir has backed both Rohit and Kohli to make the cut for the T20 World Cup despite not having played the format at the international level for over a year now.
The last time either Rohit or Kohli featured in a T20I for India was back in the semi-final of 2022 T20 World Cup when they lost to England.
“They (Rohit and Kohli) both need to get picked, both should be picked and more importantly, I want to see Rohit Sharma as captain in the T20 World Cup,” Gambhir said on Sportskeeda.
“Yes, Hardik has been captaining in T20Is but I still want to see Rohit as captain in the World Cup. Don’t pick Rohit Sharma just as a batter. Rohit is a phenomenal leader and has proved that with his batting in this ODI World Cup,” he added.
Gambhir said if Rohit wants to continue playing T20Is then he shouldn’t be picked as a batter alone.
“If you are picking Rohit, which should be the case, Virat will automatically get picked. If Rohit decides to play T20 World Cup then he should be picked as a captain who can bat,” Gambhir said.
