A 28-year-old woman was booked by the Mumbai police for allegedly throwing her 39-day-old daughter from the 14th floor of a building. According to reports, the incident took place on Thursday at Zaveri Road in Mulund West and the accused is “mentally ill” and has speech and hearing disorders.

The woman, who was staying at her parents’ residence, flung the baby girl, who got stuck on the parapet of the first-floor window of a nearby building. Hindustan Times reported that the police were informed about the incident after some locals noticed the infant lying on the window.

Police have registered a murder case against the accused woman. A team of police and neighbours managed to recover the infant and took her to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead.

Upon enquiring with the neighbours, it was found that the baby was living on the 14th floor of the neighbouring building. “We enquired with the mother and learnt she was speech and hearing impaired and her husband has the same disabilities. She is from Surat and had come to her parents’ home during pregnancy. She allegedly threw the girl around 6.30 am,” Hindustan Times quoted a police officer as saying.

As the probe continued, it was also found that the accused woman was depressed as she had lost her eight-month-old son due to illness and her father last year.
