Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan have been in the spotlight since their separate arrivals at Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s wedding, which took place at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai on July 12. Recently, Abhishek also caused a stir by liking a post discussing the difficulties of divorce, which sparked speculation about their relationship. Amidst this buzz, a throwback interview of Abhishek has resurfaced, shedding light on his views regarding equality and support in marriage.
In the interview, Abhishek was asked if he had ever placed restrictions on his wife. He responded that only an insecure or untrusting man would do such a thing. Abhishek also expressed his frustration with the societal expectation that he, as a husband, should not accompany Aishwarya to her public events, while she is expected to attend his.
“I’ve often been asked how it feels to walk the red carpet with your wife at Cannes,” Abhishek told Filmfare in 2012. “I find this attitude chauvinistic. It means that you are the husband, so how can you walk with her? Do you ever ask Aishwarya why she walks the red carpet with me at the premieres of my films? She attends all my events, but I cannot accompany her. That’s wrong. If my wife supports me, then it’s my duty to support her.”
Abhishek further elaborated on the idea that restraining a partner stems from insecurity and a lack of trust. “If a man tries to restrain his wife, then there must be two reasons for it. Firstly, he’s insecure. Secondly, he doesn’t trust her. I am a secure person and have complete faith in my wife. And why just wife, if a man tries to restrain his girlfriend, mother, or any girl, then either he’s insecure or he doesn’t trust them. And that’s not how I was brought up.”
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been a regular at the Cannes Film Festival since 2005, often accompanied by Abhishek after their marriage in April 2007. Their first appearance together at Cannes was in May 2007.
