Woman who voiced the title character of Doremon, Nobuyo Oyama, has passed away. The Japanese voice artist died on September 29 and the media reports about her death surfaced on Friday, October 11. For the unversed, Nobuyo Oyama voiced the beloved blue cat-robot from 1979, the year in which the show debuted, until 2005.

According to The Japan Times, Nobuyo Oyama passed away of natural causes. Fans are heartbroken over the news of her death. As reported by CNN, her agency, Actors 7, said Oyama died on September 29 due to old age. They apologized for the delay in its statement. “We would like to express our sincere gratitude for the kindness you extended to the deceased during her lifetime,” they said. The agency also shared that a private funeral attended by relatives was held for Oyama.
Who Was Nobuyo Oyama?
Nobuyo Oyama was born in 1933, in Tokyo, and began her career as a voice artist in 1957. She voiced the character Lassie. She then lent her voice Hustle Punch, it was aired between 1965 and 1966. She had lent her voice to the lead character, Punch. She then voiced the character of Kappei Jin in Invincible Super Man Zambot 3.
She was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2001 which led to her retiring from all kinds of roles. However, she remained the voice of Doraemon. However, in 2005, Oyama eventually decided to retired as Doraemon as well. “I hope Doraemon will still be a beloved character in the distant future,” Oyama said at the time, as reported by AP.
She returned to the industry in 2010 as the voice of Monokuma, in the hit video game series Danganronpa.
The voice artist was married to actor and television talent Keisuke Sagawa in 1964. He was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 2012 and died in 2017.
