Kajol, Ajay Devgn on Koffee With Karan: 5 Highlights from the Episode
Ajay has social anxiety and Kajol is very careful with spending money. Here’s all you need to know about Bollywood’s most dependable couple.

In arguably one of the most interesting episodes of this season so far (after Saif and Sara Ali Khan’s of course), Koffee with Karan on Sunday made us meet a Kajol and Ajay Devgn we hardly knew.

Though she was as spunky and feisty as we know her to be and he as brooding, and they behaved exactly like any couple who’s married for 20 years does, but the latest episode had some pleasant surprises thrown in just when we thought we knew everything about this star couple already.

Here are the highlights:

The patch-up

Without wasting any time, Karan directly addressed the elephant in the room—his public spat with Kajol and Ajay two years ago when his Ae Dil Hai Mushkil clashed at the box office with Ajay’s Shivaay.

At the time, Ajay had accused Karan of bribing Kamaal R Khan to badmouth Shivaay. Kajol, too, had taken Ajay’s side. She tweeted that she was shocked to hear the story, much to Karan’s dismay who then decided to severe his 30-year-old friendship with her.

Karan even wrote in his autobiography An Unsuitable Boy that he could never be friends with Kajol again. However, that was not to be. Kajol invited him to her birthday. Karan instinctively went and they laughed it off.

During the show, both Karan and Kajol talked earnestly about how much they had missed each other in the last two years.

Ajay has social anxiety

Ajay clarified that he did not attend parties, award shows and social events not because he is rude or aloof but because he has social anxiety. Kajol countered him, saying it had more to do with laziness but Ajay said he liked to do his work and come back straight home to his family.

Ajay—the doting father, the typical husband

Kajol revealed that Ajay is a ‘hyper’ father—the one that waits by the door until his daughter Nysa is back home. When Karan asked what he’d say to the boy Nysa brought home to meet him, Ajay said with a straight face, “Get out”.

Turns out Ajay isn’t just a typical Indian father, he is also a typical Indian husband—the kind that forgets his wedding date, teases his wife over her age and admits to not listening to her half the time. In fact, when Karan asked him about the one lie that all actors tell, he promptly said, “I love my wife”.

The Kajol we didn’t know

Did you know Kajol does not like spending too much money and gets stressed when someone buys her expensive gifts? Not just low maintenance, she is also a dutiful wife, so much so that she let Ajay win the second game where they had to call an industry friend and make them say “Hi Karan, it’s me.” Ajay called Kajol, who was competing against him, and she sportingly let him win.

Crediting Kajol for going out of her way to bond with his family, Ajay informed that his mother feels more at home with her than she does with him.

Ajay and Karan also revealed that Kajol is most comfortable in the company of children and the elderly—people either younger than 10 years or older than 60 years.

And finally, the two men discussed Kajol’s new-found obsession—taking selfies. Talking about it, Ajay quipped, “She has never done this in her life and I don’t know budhaape mein aake...”

Why Kajol doesn’t do too many films

Kajol said she expects the script of any film she does to be like a good book—fast-paced and exciting. She said if it doesn’t excite her, getting associated with it is not worth her time or effort, explaining why she has said no to several films and hasn’t starred in too many character-driven projects.
