Game Of Thrones Author George RR Martin Slams Anti-Fans In Blog: 'It Used To Be Fun'
In his blog, Game Of Thrones author George RR Martin pointed out the toxicity on social media, particularly surrounding TV and movies.

George RR Martin, the creator of Game of Thrones, expressed his frustration with the growing toxic fandoms and the negativity of social media in a recent blog post titled Dark Days. At 75, Martin, who is still busy completing the long awaited The Winds of Winter, took to his blog to share his current feelings, accompanied by a banner that read ‘current mood: depressed’. Starting with the A Song of Ice and Fire series in 1996, Martin initially received praise. While the first seven seasons of Game of Thrones went on to become a global sensation, the author faced a shift in response, particularly during the controversial Season 8, which received heavy criticism from viewers. In his blog, Martin pointed to the toxicity of social media, particularly surrounding TV and movies.

The author shared, “Well, I take solace where I can. In chocolate thrones, if nowhere else. In books. In films and television shows, though even there, toxicity is growing. It used to be fun talking about our favorite books and films, and having spirited debates with fans who saw things differently, but somehow in this age of social media, it is no longer enough to say ‘I did not like book X or film Y and here’s why.’ Now social media is ruled by anti-fans who would rather talk about the stuff they hate than the stuff they love and delight in dancing on the graves of anyone whose film has flopped.”

Meanwhile, George RR Martin began his blog post by expressing his relief that the challenging year 2023 has ended, as he described it as a nightmare both globally and personally. He further shared his positive outlook for the new year, however, he voiced his concerns that 2024 may bring additional challenges.

Despite facing negative comments and criticism, Martin remains active in various TV projects set in the Game of Thrones universe. Currently busy working on Season 2 of House of the Dragon, Martin is also dedicated to completing The Winds of Winter, a long delayed next chapter in A Song of Ice and Fire. Additionally, he is involved in multiple spinoff projects, including an animated series titled Nine Voyages, a Jon Snow focused spinoff, adaptation of Dunk and Egg titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, and another series titled 10,000 Ships is also in the works.
