Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed starrer Barzakh has landed in trouble in Pakistan. The show, which released on YouTube last month, will be taken down from YouTube in Pakistan on August 9, three days after the finale airs. The news was confirmed by Zindagi on Instagram. In a statement, they confirmed that they are pulling down the six-episode series. The reason is said to be the gay love story explored in the series.
“We, at Zindagi and Team Barzakh, extend our heartfelt gratitude to our global audience for their unwavering support for Barzakh – a show that was created to bring people together everywhere. But in light of the current public sentiment in Pakistan, we have made the decision to voluntarily withdraw Barzakh from YouTube Pakistan, effective August 9, 2024. This decision underscores our dedication to honouring our audiences without causing alienation,” the team said in their statement.
Directed by Asim Abbasi, Barzakh featured a gay romantic track featuring Fawad M Khan. The queer angle did not go down well with a large section of Pakistani audiences. Many took to the comments section and criticised the makers for the approach.
About Barzakh:
The show is set against the picturesque valley of Hunza Valley. The show, as per the trailer, will revolve around the journey of a 76-year-old man who stuns his estranged children and grandchildren by announcing his wedding to the ghost of his first true love. This unconventional event sparks emotional revelations and confrontations as family members gather, unsure whether to celebrate or intervene.
The show is directed by the visionary behind hit Pakistani titles ‘Churails’ and ‘Cake’, Asim Abbasi. The show marked Fawad and Sanam reunion after 12 years. Besides Fawad and Sanam, the show also features Fawad M Khan, Khushhal Khan, Salman Shahid, and Sajid Hasan. The show is still available in India.
