Expert Busts Myths Associated With Curd, Says 'It Has Nothing To Do With Cold And Cough'
Despite its many benefits, there's a prevailing belief that curd should be avoided during winter or when battling a cold or cough.

As summer approaches, the demand for curd and other cooling food ingredients is on the rise. Curd, a staple in many diets, is renowned for its ability to keep the body cool during intense heat while providing essential nutrients. Made by curdling milk with lactic acid bacteria, the curd is not only delicious but also highly nutritious, boasting benefits such as improved digestion, boosted immunity and promotion of healthy skin. Its probiotic properties contribute to gut health, making it a valuable addition to any diet.

Despite its many benefits, there’s a prevailing belief that curd should be avoided during winter or when battling a cold or cough. However, Dr. Priyanka Rohatgi, Chief Clinical Nutritionist at Apollo Hospital in Bengaluru, dispels this myth. She asserts that curd has no direct correlation with colds or coughs, which are typically caused by viruses or bacteria. Curd serves as a probiotic, fostering the growth of beneficial bacteria in the stomach, which supports overall health. During bouts of flu or viral infections, when individuals may drink less water or prefer warm beverages, consuming curd can help replenish lost fluids and maintain hydration levels.

Nevertheless, curd may not be suitable for everyone. Dr. Rohatgi warns that some individuals may have allergies to curd, experiencing adverse reactions even to small traces of it in food. Additionally, those with enlarged tonsils who contract a cold and subsequently consume curd may experience increased sensitivity in the tonsils. However, aside from these specific cases, consuming curd does not contribute to catching a cold.

As summer approaches, incorporating curd into one’s diet becomes even more appealing. It can be enjoyed in various forms, such as adding it to smoothies, preparing dips with hung curd, or incorporating it into curries. With its refreshing taste and numerous health benefits, curd remains a versatile and valuable addition to any summer menu.

While some misconceptions persist regarding curd and its relationship to colds and coughs, the expertise of professionals like Dr Priyanka Rohatgi sheds light on the true benefits of this dairy product. As summer approaches, embracing curd as a part of a balanced diet can contribute to overall health and well-being.
