A youth was arrested for attempting to rob a woman by pointing a revolver after breaking into her house in Kerambara near Kothamangalam on Tuesday.
The accused is Rajender Mohanthy, a native of Balashewar in Orissa. His accomplice Santhosh, who fled from the scene, was reportedly arrested by the police.
According to police officials, the incident took place around 10.30 am when Rajender broke into the house in the guise of a courier company employee delivering parcels. Santhosh waited outside to inform Rajender if any one was coming to the house.
After entering the house, he pointed the revolver at the housewife who was cooking in the kitchen. He demanded her to give the gold ornaments and money kept in the house.
Seeing this from a distance, the housemaid shouted and raised an alarm. Soon the neighbours gathered and cornered the accused person. Though Rajender attempted to shoot at the people, the gun did not work. Sensing danger Santhosh escaped from the scene. His bike number was later handed over to the police and he was reportedly arrested from the nearby area.
While interrogation, Rajender submitted to the police that he was working in Bangalore. The police are investigating whether any other cases have been filed against the accused in other police stations.
He will be produced before the court on Wednesday. The police officials said that though the revolver possessed by the accused was original, it was not working.
