KOCHI: They had made their vows to one another, to be faithful to each other until death, in sorrow and in joy. This was the reason the 70 couples, both young and the aged from different walks of life gathered on Sunday morning at the Pastoral Centre, Palarivattom, on the occasion of the World Marriage Day. To celebrate the joy of being together.Fr Jose Kottayil, who inaugurated the function said: “Man and woman have equal status and are not subordinate to each other, especially the woman. She is the one who complements the man. So, unless importance and respect is given to each spouse, it could lead to a broken family, which in turn would disrupt the happiness among parents and children.”The morning session had classes on love and the need for maintaining intimacy among the spouses.“Love is more of a decision or a choice rather than a feeling or a simple throbbing for each other. Even when a person has lost beauty, money or health, it is the decision of the husband or wife to continue loving the spouse.”Various games focusing on the theme of building intimacy among couples were held. Also, the couples shared their experiences of being together. Hibi Eden MLA and wife Linda Eden were the chief guests at the function.“Of late, the number of divorces in the state has increased at an alarming rate. Even though society is highly literate, the rate of divorce cases show that education and a peaceful family life are not interconnected. More efforts should be taken to make the family life successful,” Hibi said.Prizes were distributed to couples who have completed 50 and 25 years of married life. Newly-wed couples were also honoured at the function, which was organised jointly by Y’s men’s International and the Kochi unit of the Marriage Encounter.
