Work on Underground Stretch of RRTS in Meerut in Last Lap, Track-laying in Full Swing
Three underground stations are being constructed for the RRTS corridor in Meerut – Meerut Central, Bhainsali, and Begumpul. Of these three, only Begumpul will provide both RRTS and metro services while Meerut Central and Bhainsali are only metro stations

The underground stretch of the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) in the Uttar Pradesh city is taking final shape. The structure of all the underground stations is ready and both internal and exterior finishing works are in progress, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) said on Wednesday.

In a statement, the company building the RRTS also said that track-laying activities are in full swing on an about 5-km-long underground section from Meerut Central to Begumpul.

Three underground stations are being constructed for the RRTS corridor in Meerut – Meerut Central, Bhainsali, and Begumpul. Of these three, only Begumpul will provide both RRTS and metro services while Meerut Central and Bhainsali are only metro stations. The RRTS trains, also called Namo Bharat trains, will pass through the other two stations without stopping.

The underground portion in Meerut starts after Brahmapuri metro station near Ramlila Maidan on Delhi Road to Tank Chowk following Begumpul station. This underground section has now been connected to the elevated viaduct on both sides of the corridor through ramps.

Begumpul is the only underground station of RRTS in Meerut. The station is the largest underground station in Meerut and the deepest station of the entire Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor, offering interchanging options for those switching to and from Meerut Metro.

The station has taken shape. Two tracks are being laid on the island platform of the station. Both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro trains will be operated on these tracks with the use of the most modern signalling system consecutively.

“Being a big business centre of Meerut, four entry-exit gates have been constructed at this station for the convenience of the people. The technical rooms of the station are also almost ready. The stairs, escalators, lifts etc inside the station are in the final stage of installation. Air conditioning ducts are also being installed for a comfortable journey,” the statement added.

Glass lifts are being installed inside the station to make it appear more airy, spacious, open, and lit. Some of these lifts are wider to accommodate stretchers also if required. Along with this, space has also been set in the train to carry wheelchairs and stretchers.

Meerut Central will be the first underground station in Meerut from the Delhi side. It is built ahead of Ramlila Maidan (Maruti Showroom). The next will be Bhainsali station. Both these stations will be serving only to the Meerut Metro. The structure of both the stations is ready.

Both these stations will have an island-type platform with four tracks. The two outside tracks will be for the Namo Bharat train to pass through while the inner two tracks of the platform will be for the Meerut Metro train to stop.

Meerut Central station will have two entry-exit gates while Bhainsali, built near the city bus depot, will have three entry-exit gates for the convenience of passengers among the extra crowd.

At both stations, the technical rooms are also almost ready, and finishing works are in progress.

Meerut Metro will introduce a safe, fast, and modern means of transportation for the residents of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. A total of 13 stations are being constructed along a 23 km section of the Meerut Metro, with three underground and the rest elevated. The Meerut Metro will operate on RRTS infrastructure, a first in the country, with the entire project expected to be completed by June 2025.

Presently, a 34 km section between Sahibabad and Modi Nagar North of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor is operational. It connects Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, Duhai Depot, Murad Nagar, Modi Nagar South, and Modi Nagar North. The NCRTC is expecting to complete the entire stretch between Delhi and Meerut by June 2025.
