Jaipur: Far away from sports field in the dusty lanes of Sadulpur in Churu district of Rajasthan, discus thrower and Commonwealth games gold medalist Krishna Poonia is warming up to play the game of politics. Poonia has filed her papers as the Congress candidate from Sadulpur amid much fanfare.
"The way I have excelled in sports I want to give my hundred per cent to serving you now here in Sadulpur. If I am given a chance, I will rid the area of crime, work for better infrastructure and ensure that the sportsperson here get facilities on par with Haryana," said Poonia, discus thrower turned Congress candidate.
Poonia's induction into the Congress was seen by many as the party's answer to Olympic medalist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, who has entered the BJP's fold. While Rathore may have been reserved by the BJP for the general elections as his name did not figure in the party's assembly polls, Poonia has had to hit the ground running. Poonia is pitted against the BJP's sitting MLA Kamla Kaswan.
With Jats holding sway over the Sadulpur seat, both the BJP and the Congress have fielded candidates from the Jat community. The Congress is pinning its hopes on Poonia, who is married into a prominent family in Churu's Rajgarh.
"I'm sure Krishna Poonia will do very well here...which is why Rahul Gandhi himself chose her for this role," Deepender Hooda, Congress MP and Haryana Chief Minister's son.
Sadulpur was a Congress stronghold until Kamla Kaswan the wife of MP Ram Singh Kaswan turned it around to a BJP seat. With Poonia, the Congress is taking a shot, hoping to win it back from the BJP
