Amid the ongoing controversy over Pune IAS officer Puja Khedkar’s ‘VIP demands’, another case of a similar sort was recently reported from Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun district. In the controversial incident during the joining ceremony for newly-appointed accountants in Buduan, an accountant named Mahendra Singh sparked a dispute by demanding breakfast from officials present, including the District Magistrate (DM) and an Union minister.
The incident occurred at the Atal Auditorium in the Collectorate premises, where 110 new accountants were receiving their appointment letters. Mahendra Singh, assigned to Sadar Tehsil’s Rionaia, confronted officials during their breakfast, expressing discontent over the lack of arrangements made for the newly appointed accountants.
District Magistrate Manoj Kumar reportedly instructed Mahendra to take his seat and assured him that breakfast would be provided in due course. Despite this, Mahendra continued to stand near the officials, which soured the atmosphere. Following the departure of the Union minister and other dignitaries, DM Manoj Kumar issued a notice to Mahendra Singh, citing breach of protocol and indiscipline for approaching the dias without permission.
The notice from the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) demanded an explanation from Mahendra Singh within two days, emphasising that failure to provide a satisfactory response could lead to termination under the Uttar Pradesh Employee Conduct Rules. The SDM’s letter condemned Mahendra’s behaviour as offensive and a serious violation of established protocols.
In a similar incident recently, a 34-year-old trainee IAS officer in Pune made headlines over her alleged demands for a separate office, staff and quarters — which she is not entitled to as a probationer. Pune police are currently probing charges that she used a red beacon and an insignia of the Maharashtra government on her private Audi vehicle.
