Residents of Phugana village in Muzaffarnagar opened fire and pelted stones over a police team who had gone there to initiate attachment proceedings against absconding accused in Muzaffarnagar riots related gangrape cases.

SP Rural Alokpriya Darshi said on the direction of court a police team had gone to Phugana village and initiated attachment proceedings against the absconding accused.

The irate villagers opened fire and pelted stones on the police team. However, no one was hurt during the incident, he said.

A local court had ordered police to initiate attachment proceedings against 21 absconding accused in the five cases of gangrape during the Muzaffarnagar riots.

A case has been registered against the offenders, police said, adding that a company of Provincial Armed Constabulary has been deployed in the area to keep situation under control.
