Venkat Subrahmaniom: From Cricket to crime
The 22-year-old had come to Kerala to play cricket, but ended up brutally attacking a family during a failed robbery...

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The story of 22-year-old Venkat Subrahmaniom, who brutally attacked a family in broad daylight on Sunday, would put the cricketers in the state to shame. Reason? The assailant, who was an exceptionally good cricketer, had come to the city because he thought that he would rise to great heights from here as the State experienced a dearth of good cricketers. It was during the police interrogation that Venkat revealed his cricketing ambitions that eventually led him to the crime. Venkat was pursuing his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration when he was introduced to one Selvaraj, with whom he quickly grew closer. It was Selvaraj who told him about the prospects of heading to Kerala, where he held a chance of rising to the top, given the conditions here.Totally convinced by Selvaraj, Venkat dropped his course in the middle of the fourth semester and set off for the city. But, before leaving, he had borrowed an amount of Rs 4 lakh from several persons and given it to Selvaraj for arranging a meeting with a leading coach in the city. Venkat also convinced his family that he had got admission to an MBA course in the city. But on reaching Thiruvananthapuram, he could never meet the coach mentioned by Selvaraj. His attempts to contact Selvaraj over phone also failed as he repeatedly received the ‘switched off’ message at the other end.Venkat managed to survive with the money sent by his father as the ‘course fee’. But that was not enough, as his debts kept mounting. At one point, he grew desperate and decided to make money by hook or crook to save himself as he was getting threatening calls from the people who had lent him money.Venkat also told the police that his operation was not at all pre-planned and that his choice of the house was random since it sported the richest look in the locality. On Sunday morning, he went to the Connemara market in Palayam and bought a dagger. Then he went to the house, which was not far away from the lodge where he stayed. He thought that he could get enough money from the house. But his inexperience proved costly as he could not execute the operation successfully, he told the police. The interrogation was led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajpal Meena. The investigators who had probed into the robbery case in the same house about two years ago also interrogated Venkat to find out whether he was in any way connected to the earlier robbery.Meanwhile, sources at the Medical College Hospital said that all three victims, Priyadas G Mangalath, his wife Jessy Priyadas and son Goutham,  were out of danger. But Jessy is still admitted to the Critical Care Unit.
